Volunteer Opportunity – Tutor
The "I Have a Dream"® Charitable Trust seeks volunteer
tutors to provide academic support in basic reading, math or other
needed subjects to an individual child or a group of children in
an effort to encourage the fulfilment of requirements for completing
high school and achieving entrance into an NZQA Accredited Tertiary
Institution. Every volunteer should provide a safe, meaningful,
and trustful relationship with the Dreamer. Training and a tutor
handbook will be provided.
Goals:
- To keep Dreamers in school.
- To help Dreamers progress academically.
Tutor Responsibilities:
- To tutor my Dreamer, providing academic support and homework
support on a regular basis, a minimum of once per week.
- To fill out brief written reports of each tutoring session,
and other paperwork as required.
- Meet with the Project Coordinator and report to him/her regarding
the progress and/or concerns about the Dreamer(s).
- To receive training where necessary.
- To act as a positive role model providing guidance, support,
and encouragement and motivation for my Dreamer. To encourage
high academic standards and emotional growth. To be consistent,
dependable and not make promises you cannot keep.
- To respect confidentiality of any information learned regarding
the student and/or the student’s family.
- To make every effort to attend all meetings and in-service trainings
offered by IHAD.
- To comply with all policies and procedures set forth by IHAD
through the volunteer manual and code of ethics.
- To notify Project Coordinator of any issues, changes in availability
for volunteer service or resignation as a volunteer.
Time Commitment:
- Must be able to commit to a one hour Tutoring session per week
for a minimum of one school year. Tutoring runs from 4.00-5.00pm
during our after school programme, which is held Monday through
Thursday each week of the school term at the IHAD centre.
Training and Support Plan:
- Tutor will receive initial information on his/her Dreamer
- Tutor will be provided with a tutor manual of resources and
activities.
- Tutor will receive an initial training session and periodic
resource sessions.
- Project Coordinator will be available for feedback via meetings
and phone calls at least once a month
- Additional trainings will be provided to tutor if required
Qualifications:
- Excellent communication skills
- Proficient skills in math and reading
- Positive attitude
- Patience
- Interest in seeing children succeed
- Volunteering as a Tutor does not necessarily require previous
classroom or tutoring experience.

Tutor Placement Process
1. Fill out and sign the volunteer application form in full (including
at least two referees)
2. Include a photocopy of your drivers licence and car insurance
(if applicable)
3. Sign the Police Background Check Consent Form
4. Sign the Code of Ethics
5. Complete a personal interview with the IHAD Project Co-ordinator
6. Complete a mandatory 3 hour orientation and tutor training session
